Don Quijote de La Mancha for Kids

Las increíbles aventuras de DON QUIJOTE Y SANCHO PANZA for kids

Finding children's books in Spanish can be challenging depending on where you live in. A couple of years ago, I stumbled upon a version of Don Quijote for kids on a family trip to Florida. I was excited to find it because it's one of the pillars of Spanish literature and a universal classic.

With excitement burning my fingertips, I opened the book.  I kept turning from one page to the next with a big smile on my face, thinking "I have to get this book for my child." The author, Cesar Bona, is a teacher who wanted kids to enjoy and learn about Don Quijote. He selected some of the most famous chapters of the original book and adapted them for young audiences. His narration is simpler and uses modern Spanish instead of Castilian. In 48 pages, Bona submerges the reader in Don Quijote's universe. The reader learns about Don Quijote's ideals while also laughing with Sancho...or at Sancho; it will all depend on the reader and their sense of humor. My son's favorite chapter was—and still it's—Chapter XX. In the this chapter, Don Quijote and Sancho Panza are in the middle of nowhere. Sancho Panza needs to use the restroom, but there isn't any. Bathroom jokes are a big hit around here!

At the end of the book, Bona has activities that your child will enjoy. My favorite activity is Inventa el capítulo (write your own chapter). Bona provides sentence stems to facilite the writing process. It also establishes the setting and the beginning of the action. You can tell he's a teacher! We love this book and it has become a staple at our home.
